The Interpreter
People always often ask “Why did you pursue ASL interpreting?” Growing up in New Orleans, I remember seeing more Deaf people in the community and using sign language. I was fascinated. I would try not to stare at them but I also was so curious and had such a respect for the fact that people could speak with their hands. To me, it looked like dancing! I took some community classes as a child and the interest was always there as I became an adult but, I didn’t really think college was my path. When the Covid-19 pandemic happened, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to explore this interest and pursue my education. Louisiana has only one interpreter training program in the state at Delgado Community College. I enrolled in the Spring of 2021 and graduated in May 2023. I am currently in the process of figuring out what my path into interpreting will look like. My hope is to eventually be interpreting in non-traditional spaces and advocate for more accessibility so that the Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities have equal access to entertainment, strip club environments, kink conventions, comic cons, etc. I am excited to continue my education through the Deaf Studies program at Gallaudet University and eventually earn my bachelor’s degree so that I can become a national certified interpreter. My portfolio is growing and I am continuing to study ASL and Deaf Culture as I make moves to figure out my place in the interpreting world.
